I like swing, i like music of 30-50th of the last century "unfashionably" and "retro", but
I found like-minded persons, created a group and appeared, that our music very befits contemporaneity.
how does it seem to you?

If you are, or have been, a bay area lindy hopper, you know the doghouse.

What you may not know, is that tonight is the last night of the doghouse.

I could use your help... [05 Jun 2007|10:53am]

I haven't been dancing much in the last three years. Mostly, due to the fact that the hubby doesn't dance. I would love to teach him but I am pretty bad at teaching especially the lead part. So, do you have any suggestions for really good instructional videos? Something that really teaches the whole concept of leading and makes it interesting? I need to get him to want to do it. :)
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Are there any places where people who don't want/use their swing videos sell them? It would be awesome if I could find them for not so much money.

L.A. Dancers: Memories [03 May 2007|12:41pm]

funkygecko
Do people still go to Memories? I've been only a handful of times since they reopened (oh, how I miss the original Memories). It's been either really hot or really cold, more often cold. In fact, I've only had a good time there when some kind of exchange or something was happening that weekend. I want to get out dancing more but I'm so sick of LindyGroove that I need an alternative.

St. Patrick's Day swing songs? [13 Mar 2007|01:08pm]

Do any of you have suggestions for swing songs that would work well at a St. Patrick's Day dance?

DJs and music choices (warning: rant) [24 Oct 2006|11:49am]

zenin4711
I've noticed a number of swing DJs largely play a particular sound. Fast 20's songs, typically original recordings (eg, the fidelity is often terrible), that are fairly low energy and have incredibly repetitive melodies. To me this music feels like a metronome...there's just not much there to work with, to play off of? No breaks, no real accents, nothing bent a little to do a slide to, nothing. Meh

This music is at the high end (speed wise) of what most decent dancers can lindy to...but even if you can do lindy to it lindy is to "big" at these speeds to fit the very mild melodies. It just feels wrong (huge dance, mild song). Bal and 20's charleston work ok to this stuff in that reguard...but it's still very uneventful music...like a metronome. And there's no variance...ten songs in a row will be this sound...heaven forbid we mix things up a bit. WTF?

It just seems like a very limiting type of music for dancing. Considering how huge a spectrum exists that's swingable...it boggles my mind why a number of DJs are stuck on this particular vintage "old people's music" sound. They don't even mix it up...they typically play the same exact sets every week. Strangely these DJs are typically pretty young. I've listened to some play very low fidelity live recordings complete with three minutes of the band leader introducing each member of the band over little more then a metronome drum beat. Huh? They obviously don't even watch the crowd as often it's clear with many songs that the floor empties and/or the ones left standing are struggling to dance to it and don't look like they are having a good time.

I'm tempted to buy one of those, "This Music Sucks!", t-shirts. *sigh*

There are some good DJs, but reguardless of the music genre the vast majority of DJs seem to just have bad and/or very limited tastes. I've come up with a theory that they become DJs not because they have good music taste but actually because they have bad music taste. -No one would ever play the horrid songs they requested, they got frustrated, and became a DJ in order to force their bad music to be played.

hello! i'm new to this community but not new to swing. i've been swing dancing for ten years now.

i am working on a master's thesis in computer science that is all about swing. i've created an on-line, user-built database of swing dance moves and routines. i've already done one round of testing, and need to do another. would anyone in this group do me a favor and test it out? the content is what it is, created by users for users. though also some of it right now is completely test data... i'm looking for feedback on the way the site is set up -- is it interesting? does it work? is it something you'd use?

thanks in advance!

Musicality tips? [03 Jul 2006|05:08pm]

fleaplus
Looks like there haven't been any posts in a while, so here's a try at generating some discussion...

Do any of you have tips for improving one's musicality?

In addition to general tips, I'm also interested in ways to get 6-count swing to mesh musicality-wise with the standard "4 counts of 8."

A couple links I've found so far:
* http://swingshiftontap.com/aaba.html
* http://www.psrg.lcs.mit.edu/~sheldon/dance/massabda2006/musicality.html (more for general/competitive ballroom dancing)

On a totally different note, I saw Bill Nye the Science Guy lindy-hopping at the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association this past weekend. That was pretty cool.

Looking for song "Rhythm"? -For Big Apple [12 Jun 2006|01:59pm]

zenin4711
In Southern California (and maybe beyond, I've no idea) they do the Big Apple to a song I believe is called "Rhythm" and I'm told is by "Cassie McGee". For the life of me I can't seem to track down this song or artist.

Any tips on finding this recording? Am I misspelling the artist name or maybe the song has a different title?

I'm going to New York for a week tomorrow...

Anyone have any suggestions for where to go for some good lindy?
I've been looking it up, but it would be nice to get some advice from people who have actually been dancing in NY.

Thanks!

Question... [01 Mar 2006|05:40pm]

Hey do you any of you know if they still swing dance at Disneyland on Sat. nights? Some friends of mine and I are going to Disney in April and were wondering if they still did that. It's tradition for us when we go. :)
Thanks
